It’s an entertaining rant, but it’s the bit at the end—“Programming is an exercise in overcoming how wrong you’ve been in the past”—that’s particularly noteworthy.

This is a great little piece from Ira Glass on taste and creative work. (HT to Dustin Curtis). He’s talking about video, but it’s just as important for design. It takes a long time to live up to your ambition.

Via Daring Fireball. It’s interesting, I’ve been using Windows Vista for the first time and I actually like it. They made a version of Windows that a Mac user can appreciate. I still run in to a lot of things I find missing from OS X, but this is actually a pretty decent step up in terms of UI.

Matthew James Taylor has created some really amazing CSS liquid layouts here — far and away the best solution I’ve seen. The result is fantastic; the solution is ridiculously complicated. Alas.

Tropicana’s catastrophic (and now revoked) redesign led to a 20% drop in sales, they say. Probably because no one could figure out which carton contained which variety of OJ any longer.

This was a really insightful piece Clay Shirky wrote on the newspaper industry’s disastrous encounter with the internet. I like his more general discussion of revolutions as times where things are breaking faster than they can be replaced.

Downside of data access? Especially thinking about other ways that people are now integrating the Internet with daily life, will it require a rethink of our criminal justice system?

My new favorite game. It tells me to “Shoot Comic Sans!” What’s not to like?
